  1. The drops of rain were the tears that rolled down the Happy Prince’s sapphire eyes. They fell because the Prince was sad to see the poverty and misery of the city dwellers. Having lived in a palace, he had never experienced sorrow before.
  2. After his death, the Happy Prince’s statue was set on a high column from where he could see the ugliness and misery of the city. This made his eyes fill with tears; he was not really happy despite his title.
